Welcome!

Thank you for visiting WOOD + WATER, where I’m taking you along for the journey of building our dream home and lifestyle in the woods, by a lake, in Western North Carolina.

So, why a blog? Well, I love all things home design. I also love lake life. And I love exploring realistic and reasonably affordable ways to have both.

We never thought we could own a lake house. We never thought we could build a custom home. But with some savvy financial planning, some sacrifice, and a lot of hard work, we’re fortunate enough to have an opportunity to make our dream a reality.

But here’s the thing: the dream of “lake life” doesn’t have to mean a two-million-dollar home with 360 degree water views, luxurious furnishings from high-end boutiques, a private dock, a boat, and a couple of jet skis. Lake life can look a lot of different ways.

For us, it looks like a modest home tucked into the woods, with cozy furniture and personal touches reflective of our favorite things, a private wooded view and walkable access to the lake. A place where everything we need to love our home, slow down, and enjoy everything nature has to offer, is still right at our fingertips.

Will there be challenges? I’m sure.
Will there be unexpected financial obstacles? You know it.
Will there be unforeseen decisions that force us to compromise or give something up? ABSOLUTELY.

But we’re going for it.

So, follow along as we figure it all out — from building and decorating our home to finding ways to create the lake lifestyle we’ve always dreamed about without breaking the bank. I’ll share inspiration, ideas, tips, lessons learned (and probably plenty of what NOT to do), and everything in between.
